Spring and summer are the biggest wedding seasons of the year, so chances are if you have friends are family that are recently-engaged, you’ll be attending a wedding (or two, or three!) in the next couple of months. If you are, then you might be wondering what you should wear as a wedding guest.
What you choose to wear as a wedding guest will definitely depend on the formality of the wedding you’re attending, because some will require very formal attire, and some will call for a more casual style. However, there are some overall tips you should follow when choosing the dress (or outfit) you’ll be wearing to a wedding, regardless of the season:
-
Never Upstage the Bride!
Make sure you choose a dress that is formal enough for the wedding you’re attending, but not overly formal or embellished so that your dress is more dazzling than a standard bridal gown. Use your best judgment- if something seems like it might be too over-the-top, stay on the safe side and choose another, more simple dress! You should also ALWAYS avoid white, even if the bride isn’t wearing it.
-
Stay Classy
Weddings tend to be formal, extravagant events because they are (hopefully) once in a lifetime! Because of this, your attire should reflect the importance of the event, so you should choose a dress that is more classy and formal than one you would wear in your normal life, even if the wedding theme is more casual than your traditional wedding. Also, many weddings take place in churches among families of all types and ages, so wearing a dress appropriate for that environment is definitely something you should consider!
-
Plan for the Weather
The season and weather can both have a huge effect on the style or dress you choose to wear to a wedding, so you should always consider these factors when shopping for your perfect wedding guest dress. If you’re attending a fall or winter wedding, dresses with heavier materials and darker colors would be more appropriate, as well as bringing some extra layers to cover up in case you get chilly. For spring and summer weddings, especially outdoor ceremonies, you should keep your dress or outfit light and airy, in softer colors like pastels to complement the season and keep you cool!
